As managers, what do we yearn for? Happy and satisfied employees who stay for long and are proud to be part of the organization, thus making them our best ambassadors. Does your employee engagement platform help you to achieve it?
What does that look like when it’s successful? Piles of relevant CVs that our employees bring from friends who want to join the company, record-breaking successes, and, most importantly—unlike old taboos—employees who are excited about coming to work!
In the past few years, we’ve helped companies rethink and set new standards for employee engagement.
Most companies have similar needs and desires: They want to create an employee engagement platform that employees want to be part of—one that encourages them to be involved in company social life and allows them reflect on their place of work, offer feedback for improvement, and, of course, be connected to the company culture.
When all of this is done successfully, the employee experience gets a real boost, which—no surprise—is good for business, too.
Can technology help make this happen? It sure can!
Today, almost every company uses or has tried out some sort of platform for employee engagement. There are a wide variety of intra-organizational platforms designed to connect employees. But if you use a platform like this, you’ve probably noticed how much work and resources it takes to keep engagement going, time after time. Because of this, many companies end up abandoning these platforms, leaving their desire to connect and engage employees unfulfilled.
After years of working closely with our clients, we’ve zeroed in on what intra-organizational platforms need to keep engagement going easily and for the long haul. It’s rooted in what we call the Eloops engagement pyramid, which is based on Maslow’s famous hierarchy of needs.
Here’s how it works:
The first question you need to ask is this: What will actually engage my employees?
First, you have to understand your employees’ needs and expectations. One way to do this is through focus groups that test their interests. Before we ask employees to hand over X megabytes of the storage on their phone, we need to take a step back to understand what will truly lead them to use the platform you choose.
What we’ve found is that most employees are aligned in terms of their expectations with regard to these types of platforms. They want easy access to things that are important to them and tools that will help them succeed on the job, timesaving shortcuts, and real-time updates—but only about the things that really matter to them.
We took their feedback and applied it to the Eloops engagement pyramid in order to illustrate how your platform can meet your employees’ needs and how you can get them involved in the goals you’re looking to achieve.
1st layer – HR on Self-Service
At the most basic level, your employees want easy access to information that matters to them and to resources that can help them succeed at their jobs. They want to consume this information in the form of self-service. At this layer, your employees can use the platform independently without requiring or involving your daily resources.
2nd layer – Internal Communication
This layer represents your organization’s ongoing internal activities, which you already create or want to create. We’re not talking about more emails that your employees will simply ignore. Instead, your platform is the place to update employees on what’s going on, offer recognition for their hard work, create opportunities that employees can bond over, and give them more chances to be heard.
3rd layer – Virtual Activities
This layer is the icing on the cake. These types of activities are often expensive and complicated to execute, but their impact can’t be understated. Company trips, team-bonding days, special celebrations—these connect employees to the company culture and strengthen their sense of belonging.
Even though they can be challenging, it’s important to offer these types of peaks of engagement every once in a while by organizing virtual activities and fun competitions that connect employees to the organizational culture and give them a chance to experience something different and enjoyable at the company. Some examples are internal campaigns, competitions for holidays and special occasions, exclusive training and enrichment opportunities. You can count on activities like these taking your platform to the next level and beyond.
To sum it all up…
Just like in other fields, when it comes to engagement, content is king. Successful planning of the content offered through your organization’s platform makes all the difference for engagement. The combination of all three layers of engagement (as shown in the pyramid) in your platform is what leads to long-term success.
The next step to working more effectively is unique access to a bank of content and materials that lead to employee engagement in an automated way while saving you time and making activities executable in a quick and efficient way. Best of all, they’ll free you up to focus on what really matters: your human capital. Luckily, that’s where we come in—let Eloops help you find the best way to engage your employees!
